Falkland Islands
The Falkland archipelago consists of two main islands, West Falkland and East Falkland and 776 smaller islands.
The population are just over 3000 with just over 2000 in the capital town of Stanley.
In the Falkland Islands, there are also 220 species of birds which five of them are penguins.
KING PENGUIN (Aptenodytes patagonicus)
This is the second largest species of penguin, similar in appearance to the Emperor but slightly smaller,
with a typical weight of 12-14kg, and an average length of 90cm.
The population in Falklands are 1,500 breeding pairs with almost all concentrated at one site at
Volunteer Point on East Falkland.
GENTOO PENGUIN (Pygoscelis papua)
Gentoo penguins lives in Antarctica and on sub-Antarctic islands. The weigh are around
8 kg and down to 5 kg and their hight 80cm.
The Falkland Islands held the largest breeding population in the world, with a recording of
121,500 breeding pairs.
ROCKHOPPER PENGUIN (Eudyptes chrysocome)
These are the smallest of the world's penguins, with an average length of around 52cm,
and an average weight off about 3kg.
The worlds largest breeding colony are found in the Falkland Islands with a
population of 280,000 breeding pairs.
MACARONI PENGUIN (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
It is the world's most numerous penguin with about 9 million pairs, despite this,
the population decline in such a number that it is categorized as vulnerable today.
The populations of Macaroni penguins are very small in the Falklands.
There are not more than a total of around 50 pairs of Macaroni breed in Rockhopper colonies
across the Falklands.
MAGELLANIC PENGUIN
You can found the Magellanic penguins around the Falkland Islands and South America,
and they are extremely numerous within these regions.
The Falklands population is well over 100,000 of breeding pairs.
